Flop City #5: Akon

Last Time it was Lil Wayne, Now I’m focused on Akon, read about it after the jump.

I never thought I would have Akon on Flop City, just because he’s never really had any bad tracks, it seems like every time he dropped a single it went big and every time an album came out it sold good, their even was a point when Akon was on everybody’s track because without him you wouldn’t have had a hit, but things have changed fast huh Mr. Konvict.

He’s had 3 amazing albums, but once he came into his 4th solo studio album he hasn’t had success with singles at all, his first offering was “Angel” it got received well but it didn’t take off at all, maybe it was the lack of promotion from the record label. They didn’t shoot a video for the track either, the album was scheduled for a December release in 2010 but it got pushed back to a later release date and then eventually it had no release date which means it was the lack of songs from him.

The 2nd offering was “Give It To Em” featuring Rick Ross, this track was just horrible, not only did it have Rick Ross on the track which I’m getting sick and tired of but it didn’t have that Akon feel to it, Angel received a better reception then “Give It To Em”, they didn’t bother to shoot a video for that either, after this I felt like Akon had lost it.

Then 3rd offering from his new album was “Take It Down Low” featuring Chris Brown, I thought this track was gonna take off because of Chris Brown but it didn’t and got received as bad as “Give It To Em”.

I think Akon can eventually come back, he’s never had bad hits like this before, Their really is no reason for Akon to even make anymore music because of the successful artists he’s signed like the major pop star “Lady Gaga” and the autotune beast “T-Pain”, so his money is straight because of the artists he’s signed but I would love to see Akon drop more music.

What do you guys think? Has he lost it? Will he eventually go downhill? or is it just a flu?

I think the fact that the guy signed Lady Gaga can excuse him anything. Face it: Gaga is madonna of today, and if signing the biggest pop act in 2000 is a flop to you, i dont know what success is. Maybe sitting around, blogging about shit

I said him signing Lady Gaga is a good thing and that’s cool but what you guys don’t understand is that Flop City is about the artists albums and singles and how well they do, not on what tracks he’s featured on, who he signs and all of that, it’s just about his album and singles and how bad they do. smh.

I’m all for putting one hit wonders on here, but putting someone who’s success was incredible and just recently hasnt produced much is a bit of a stretch. There was a point where you couldnt have a track without Akon on it, there was also that point with R. Kelly, so is R. Kelly going to be the next one on here? Every singer/rapper cant constantly have hits, not everyone is Jay-Z. And just cause they arent doesnt make them a flop.

@Ryan The point of this post is exactly what you said, its for artists who WERE putting out consistent heat and had their name buzzing, but now just can’t seen to make any hits. Of course he’ll eventually get out of his slump (or fall off) but he’s DEFINETLY flopping now. I haven’t heard any good shit from him in like 2 years, probably because he’s working with GaGa and he doesn’t really have that much of an inscentive to start putting out heat since he’s gonna be rich as fuck forever. I just don’t see him going back to how he was when he was featured on every damn song, he’s just sit back and be more of a Diddy-type now, getting on a few hits but mostly leeching off his other talented acts.
